Key Statistics for Wrexham

Data from a range of sources has been collected to give a statistical overview of Wrexham County Borough and its 47 electoral divisions/wards. The following pages contain statistical information to help residents, visitors and business gain a greater understanding of the social, economic and environmental make up of the area.

Introduction

Wrexham is the commercial and administrative centre for the industrial area of North East Wales and is the natural hub for the surrounding area.

Wrexham has retained a market town atmosphere, in spite of the fact that it has a modern, pedestrianised shopping centre offering a mixture of national and local shops. The catchment area extends far beyond the boundaries of the Borough, attracting shoppers from the border areas of Cheshire and Shropshire and from Mid and North Wales. Wrexham is the largest town in North Wales and ranks as the third largest retail centre in Wales after Cardiff and Swansea.

Wrexham County Borough has in the region of 1000 shops, banks, building societies and post offices of which over 600 are within the town inner ring road.

The last couple of decades have witnessed a significant change in the industrial character of the area as the traditional industries of coal mining and brick-making declined and disappeared.
