Portable Skate Park

The portable skate park was acquired in partnership between Wrexham County Borough Council, Plas Madoc communities First and Dee Valley Community Partnership. The main aim of this post is to help increase the provision of wheeled sport in the communities south of Wrexham.

The Skate Park was requested by local people in order to provide easily accessible activities for use by young people across 5 communities of south Wrexham. These include Acrefair, Cefn Mawr, Plas Madoc, Ruabon and Newbridge. The scheme is currently being funded by the Cathleen Davies Trust, which provides financial backing for community projects in the local area.

Aim of the scheme

The scheme aims to promote wheeled sports in the local communities surrounding Plas Madoc.  These include skateboarding, inline skating and BMX biking. 

The main aim of the Skate park is to increase long term involvement of wheeled sports, through participation, volunteering and coaching.

Objectives

• To increase the number of participants in wheeled sports.
• To increase the number of volunteers involved in the local community
• Offer opportunities for personal development of young people such as qualifications and experience working with children.
• Provide a safe learning environment for participation under supervision with coaching and advice available.

Targeted Groups

Sessions will target a number of groups including:

• Youth groups in the 5 communities
• Schools, during lunch times and after school clubs. 
• Local skating clubs – competitions
• Local young people

Partners

The skatepark was part funded by the Sports Council for Wales.  The remainder was split three ways between the local partners:

1. Wrexham County Borough Council
2. Plas Madoc Communities first
3. Dee Valley Community Partnership

As the funding was split three ways the usage of the Park has to cover all of the requirements from the three partner’s organisations as well as the five communities. 

Skate Park Coordinator

The role of the Skate Park Coordinator is to:

• Facilitate the usage of the skate park between the five communities
  
• Recruit volunteers to run sessions
  
• Aid in the assembly and transport
  
• Create a coach education program and an award scheme for participants

Quality Assurance

All staff who will be involved in the scheme are fully qualified; police checked and have received training in child protection issues.
Volunteers will be required to join the Wrexham Sports Development Volunteer programme and complete the following:

• CRB check
• First aid training
• Manual Handling training

Coaches will be required to complete the following:

• Safeguarding & Protecting Children - Sports Coach UK
• Risk assessment training
• Coaching children and young people in sport - Sports Coach UK
