Ty Mawr Country Park

Ty Mawr has all the fun of the farm in the magnificent setting of the River Dee Valley. There are lots of animals you can meet at Ty Mawr such as donkeys, pigs, and goats. You can even feed our free range chickens and ducks or admire Lawrence the guard Llama, who protects our sheep from foxes!

At Ty Mawr we do not use chemicals and pesticides on the land. That is why we have many species of wild plants and animals and in the summer our traditional hay meadows are full of colour. Why not take a gentle stroll down to the river, sit and relax and see if you can spot a salmon jumping!

Picturesquely situated beneath the dramatic Cefn Viaduct on the banks of the River Dee, Ty Mawr provides some of the best scenery around.

Healthy Walks

Why not take a longer walk along the riverside to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, along the Cefn Heritage Trail or link up with the Offas Dyke National Trail?

Whether its to admire the view, to see the farm animals or to take a walk, you could bring a picnic and have a great family day out at Ty Mawr Country Park.

Or you could join in with our Ranger led walks for socialising, beautiful views and a great way of getting fit.

Ty Mawr Country Park provides Events throughout the year which are for both adults and children. You can view or download a copy of our events programme.

Friends of group

Would you like to have your say in the future development of Ty Mawr, if so why not join THE FRIENDS OF TY MAWR COUNTRY PARK.

The ‘friends of group’ was started in 2005 and has been successful in raising money to spend on the park for projects such as the new Guinea Pig House, to purchase our new Kune Kune Pigs.

Volunteers

Ty Mawr Country Park has volunteers working here throughout the year. They contribute a great deal of time and effort to the park and are very much appreciated. The groups work on many different tasks which have included;

path work
painting
vegetation clearance
animal work
practical conservation

Junior Rangers

What is Junior Rangers? and Why join?

If you are aged 8 – 16 years old and like working with animals, being outdoors, trying your hand at various arts and crafts, going on walks and visiting other country parks in the Wrexham area, plus much, much more, then Junior Rangers is the group for you. Once you have been accepted as a junior Ranger you will work towards a series of 4 awards starting with ‘Hazel’ and working up to the ‘Sequoia’ award.

Furthermore, every hour you spend at Junior Rangers will be credited towards the Wrexham ‘Children’s University’ (CU) this is a Wrexham wide project that credits children for the time they spend on activities outside normal teaching hours. Children can work towards a bronze, silver or gold award and will receive a CU certificate and will be invited to an awards ceremony to celebrate their achievements.

How can I join Junior Rangers?

Well it’s easy! All you need to do is get your parent or guardian to fill in an application form which can be collected from Ty Mawr visitor centre or by phoning on 01978 822780 and one can be sent out by post to you. Junior Rangers sessions run throughout the year so there will always be a suitable group for you:

Winter sessions

Sat 9am – 11am, 1.30pm – 3.30pm
Sun 9am – 11am

Summer sessions

Weekdays 4pm – 5pm,
Sat 9am – 11am, 1.30pm – 3.30pm
Sun 9am – 11am

Junior Rangers is very popular and there is usually a waiting list for places, but the sooner you get your form in the sooner you will be on the list. When a space becomes available we will let you know.

Due to the nature of the work involved we must ask that all children applying for Junior Rangers must have an up to-date tetanus vaccine.

Sponsor an Animal at Ty Mawr Country Park

The sponsorship scheme was launched in 2006 and has been set up to give the public a way of supporting the animals at Ty Mawr Country Park. The sponsors pay an annual fee for their chosen animal/s and in return they receive a sponsor’s pack which includes a personalised certificate showing the animal, the name of the sponsor and the date of entry into the scheme. Also within the pack is information about the park and how we run it as an organic farm, information about the breed of animal and its lifestyle, a badge with the chosen animal on it, colouring sheet, pencil and of course a welcome note.

The sponsors are invited to a special sponsor’s day, where they can meet their animal in person with supervision by one of our rangers, and depending on which animal has been sponsored, they can groom the donkeys, feed the goats or just come and stroke a rabbit and have a photo taken. The Park is open every day of the year and the animals can be seen during the day, in the special animal houses or in the fields.

Green Flag Award

The Green flag scheme started in 1996. To be eligible for green flag status sites must be freely accessible to the public and have a site management plan.

Judging is done against the following 8 criteria:

A welcoming place
Healthy, safe and secure
Clean and well maintained
Sustainability
Conservation and heritage
Community involvement
Marketing
And management

Winning sites are given a flag and certificate to display and are featured on the green flag website. The award is valid for one year.

Ty Mawr first gained the award in 2006 and has held it each year since.

How To Get There

The park is easy to locate situated five miles south of Wrexham in the village of Cefn Mawr.

By Bus

From Wrexham

The 2C bus by Arriva runs from Wrexham Bus Station every half an hour Monday to Saturday except Bank holidays and passes Ruabon Train Station before arriving at Cefn Mawr Village.

From Oswestry

The 2 and 2A bus by Arriva runs every half an hour Monday to Saturday except Bank holidays from Oswestry bus station through Chirk before arriving at Newbridge Village (0.3 miles from Cefn Mawr).

By Train

The nearest train stations are Ruabon 2 miles away and Chirk 4 miles away. Both trains are run by Arriva Trains Wales.

By Car

Ty Mawr is sign posted as 'Country Park' on brown on white signs. Follow these signs to the park from the Llangollen/Ruabon exit off the A483.

Easter to September daily 10.30am - 4.30pm
October to Easter weekends only

Refreshments are available in the Visitor Centre (Drinks, snacks, ice creams). Sandwiches and hot meals are available in Cefn Mawr Village or at the Trevor Basin.
