Wrexham County Borough Council is made up of the commercial and administrative town of Wrexham and a number of well established urban and rural villages. Traditional occupations are being replace by new industries including Wrexham Technology Park and the town has developed into a lively retail centre.
The estimated population in 2000 was 125,750 with an estimated 11,517 males and 11,084 females in the 11 to 25 age group in 1998. The number of under 18 year olds in the County is above the Welsh national average, and well above in some wards.
The area has a strong, well developed sense of community but has suffered periods of high unemployment due to the decline of the coal, steel and brick industries.
Wrexham contains four of the five most economically deprived wards in north-east Wales. In 1997, one in five of the population was claiming income support and 19.6% of children were entitled to free school meals. Two hundred and seventy four children were on the joint disability register.
Almost 14% of the population speak Welsh as a first language. In five wards, more than 20% speak Welsh; in Pant 36.2% and in Ceiriog Ucha 54.3%.
