As part of the Economic Development Department of Wrexham County Borough Council, Wrexham ITeC was established in 1983 as a self funding organisation with the prime purpose of contributing to the re-generation and support of the socio-economic infrastructure of the area.
Wrexham ITeC was initially targeting its help and expertise to stave off the worst effects of the then recession. It put in place and delivered training programmes – using computers and electronics – to support the needs of those wishing to retrain and the changing demands of local industry and commerce. Over its existence, Wrexham ITeC has evolved to be an established and respected contributor to the continued regeneration of the area, developing its portfolio of courses and programmes to meet the ever changing needs of local business – coupled with the strategic aims of Wrexham County Borough Council.
Since its inception, Wrexham ITeC has been totally self-funding, managing a substantial annual contract with the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) via Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) – who draw on the European Social Fund (ESF). As a consequence, all the in-house and work based programmes offered by Wrexham ITeC are at no direct cost to either the individual or, where appropriate, their sponsoring company/organisation.
The emphasis within Wrexham ITeC has always been on quality and this was recognised in 1992 with the achievement of ISO 9001 followed by the Investors in People award in 1994.
Staff of Wrexham ITeC are encouraged to embrace continuous professional development so staying abreast of the continual change within their sector. Staff training also incorporates the many Council led initiatives including equality and disability awareness, discrimination, sustainability, environmental issues and global citizenship, thus ensuring that all Learners are treated fairly, according to their individual needs, and experience broader and more fulfilling curriculum.
For in-house learners, both youth and adult, though training is still Information Technology based, there has been a significant shift in emphasis in the 12 week Skill Build programme. It now focuses on work readiness. Job Search, including CV writing and interview techniques, an appropriate Key Skill, a level 1 IT qualification and assistance with numeracy and literacy skills.
Every effort is then made to find the Skill Build learner a work placement or work experience. Success within the placement can lead to a more permanent position with the opportunity to pursue a relevant National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).
For those who are employed, Wrexham ITeC continues to expand and develop its range of Foundation and Modern Apprenticeship Frameworks. The frameworks – Key Skills, NVQ levels II & III and Technical Certificates – currently include: Information Technology, Business & Administration, Customer Service, Team Leading, Supporting Teaching and Learning, Warehouse and Distribution, Retail and Contact Centre Operation (call handling). They are fully subsidised, subject to eligibility and are planned and delivered to fit in with the business needs of the Learners organisation.
A programme of IT based courses, including the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is also offered at both competitive prices for commercial clients and free, subject to conditions, to those enrolled on Frameworks.
Wrexham ITeC is justly proud of the value added services it offers to both its Learners and participating organisations. These include professional advice and guidance, assistance and signposting with Basic Skills – an area in which Wrexham ITeC is particularly keen to enhance its contribution – and assisting with recruitment in local companies.
Over the last six years, the Wrexham County Borough Council Modern Apprenticeship programmes, an initiative initially championed by Wrexham ITeC, must rate as one of the major success stories. Approximately 100 young people have benefited by this programme, the majority of this “home grown talent” progressing into full time positions within the Council and, through Wrexham ITeC, achieving NVQ Level III qualifications.
Wrexham ITeC is committed to continually seek further opportunities to enhance its service to the people and business community of Wrexham.
We’re here to help and if we can’t do it directly, then we know someone who can!
