Flags Fly at Half-Mast in Respect of South Asia Victims

In the wake of the terrible tragedy in South East Asia the Chief Executive and Leader of Wrexham Council are writing to community groups and the association for voluntary organisations in Wrexham (AVOW) to establish what the Council can do at a local level to help.

Leading politicians and Civic dignitaries will attend the special service at St Giles Parish Church, Wrexham, at 12 noon, tomorrow, Wednesday 5th January which starts with the national 3 minutes silence.

Arrangements have also been made for the flags to fly at half-mast on Queen's Square and from the Guildhall as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives in the disaster.

Isobel Garner, Chief Executive said:

"Everybody in the Council is devastated by this terrible tragedy that unfolded in front of our eyes over the Christmas and New Year period. We want to play our part in doing as much as we can to help to try and reduce the suffering of all those affected by the tsunami, and help the survivors to try and re-build their lives and come to terms with the dreadful losses they have suffered."

Councillor Neil Rogers, Leader of the Council added:

"Our thoughts are with all those people who have lost family and friends in the earthquake. Our concerns as a Council lie with helping those affected in the whole of South East Asia, not just one or two areas, and we will be working with local community groups and organisations to do our utmost to assist in whatever way we can."
