A brand new free digital television service for Wrexham has been officially launched today.

It is the first interactive local authority digital TV service in Wales that provides an easy way for residents to get local information, advice and services through their TV. It is a joint project between Wrexham County Borough Council and a local government technology project DigiTV.

Called “Looking Local” the service is available to Sky subscribers. Using your TV remote you can:

* Get local information and useful contacts

* Have your say on local issues

* Plan a journey and get up to the minute transport news

* Report a missed bin, request a council house repair, re-new your library books and lots more…

The site has been set up to enable residents to contact the Council from the comfort of their armchairs. They now have another quick and easy way to get in touch with the authority to complement existing services such as personal visits to offices, telephone contact or internet access via www.wrexham.gov.uk

Today, Monday, 30th October sees the start of a two-week campaign to launch the new service. Fliers will be distributed locally that have an easy peel guide to stick on the Sky Remote control and an advertising campaign to raise awareness will follow.

Over 70% of homes now have access to digital TV across the country and by 2009 all of Wales will be digital. Launching a digital TV service gives Wrexham the opportunity to be a leading local information provider on digital TV and create service efficiencies.

Leader of Wrexham County Borough Council, Cllr Aled Roberts said today: “This is an exciting new development for the people of Wrexham. We have already made significant improvements to our customer access including the recent introduction of longer opening hours and digital television is another example of our commitment to developing first class services. Wales will be at the forefront of the digital tv switch over and Wrexham is leading the way with this new easy to use interactive service.

Wrexham County Borough Council’s Customer Access Manager Helen Gerrard has been working closely with DigiTV to get the service ready for the launch. She said: “We found the DigiTV technology an excellent way of developing a presence on digital television as well as mobile phones. We were very much guided by the knowledge, expertise and support of DigiTV that was invaluable throughout the site’s development. With limited resource implications for ourselves we now have one of the first fully interactive Digital TV and Mobile sites offering Council services in Wales."
