Wrexham 2008/09 Budget and Council Tax
The Council has set its budget for 2008/09. The budget is just under £194 million. The services include schools, and other children’s services, adult social care, housing, transport and leisure facilities.
The budget is mainly financed by grants provided by the Welsh Assembly Government through the Revenue Support Grant £116 million, non-domestic business rates £34 million and other smaller incentive and deprivation grants.
Councillors have had to make some very difficult decisions in arriving at the budget because the Assembly support to Local Government was lower than anticipated. Some £3.3 million of savings have been made by the Council to limit the rise in council tax.
The recommended budget results in £42 million remaining to be funded by council tax payers. The resultant Band D charge for Wrexham County Borough Council is £814.08, a 2.9% increase. The North Wales Police Precept and Community Council Precepts are added to the tax for council services resulting in an overall Band D equivalent to £1,034.53.
The Council Leader, Aled Roberts, said, “The Council has worked hard to keep the council tax down to 2.9% which represents a 44p per week increase. It is anticipated Wrexham will have one of the lowest increases in Wales.”
The Lead Member for Finance & Performance, Alun Jenkins said, “I am pleased that the Council has protected schools from cuts for the third year in a row. We have also provided money to meet the rising demand for social care services. Significant efficiency savings have been made and the Council will continue to work hard to ensure residents get improvement every year."
