Spectacular Start to Christmas Countdown

This year’s Christmas town centre activities kick off in spectacular style on Thursday 16th November with an action packed switch-on event in Queens Square.

The event will take place from 6.00pm with a range of great entertainment for all the family before a group of Wrexham footballers, including captain Neil Roberts, help one lucky competition winner switch on the town centre’s Christmas lights. Evening Leader readers can win the chance to press the button in next week’s Evening Leader competition and will also win a signed Wrexham AFC shirt and other football goodies.

Crowds will be entertained by Tip Top Productions performing songs and dances from their Christmas pantomime Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and the synchronised lights switch on across the town is sure to get everyone in the Christmas mood. The event will take place on a specially erected stage in Queen’s Square and coincides with the start of the seasonal late-night shopping hours. Stores such as BHS and Marks & Spencer will be staying open to attract those early Christmas shoppers. Once the lights have been switched on there will be a spectacular fireworks display to bring the evening to a marvellous climax.

“It promises to be a great family evening”, says Kay Rickard, who has organised the event on behalf of the Economic Development Department within the Council. “The songs and sketches from the pantomime will really get people into the festive spirit while the climax of the lights switch-on and fireworks will certainly give the town a Christmas feel.”

The event is the first in a programme of Christmas events planned by the Council including a Victorian Christmas Market, children’s parties with Father Christmas, a Caribbean Christmas and an evening of Camels and Carols! All the events are planned for Thursday evenings to complement the late night shopping nights while most stores will also be opening on Sundays throughout the build up to Christmas.
