Local Faith Leaders sign up to One Wrexham Charter of Belonging
The One Wrexham Charter of Belonging has received further strong support on at a recent event at St Giles church.
Local leaders from Christian, Muslim and Hindu faith groups joined together to sign the Charter and make a public commitment to building understanding, friendship and mutual respect between all people and communities in the County Borough.
Councillor Aled Roberts, Leader of Wrexham Council said: “The Charter sets out a statement of values that everyone living in Wrexham belongs to the wider community.”
The One Wrexham Charter was launched by the Council in the summer of 2006 and has already been signed by the Council, key partner organisations and local companies. Star County Textile Services is one of the companies to have signed up to the Charter and one of the company’s partners Maurice Salvoni said: “I think the One Wrexham Charter is an excellent idea and underlines the responsibility that businesses have to treat all their employees fairly.”
This latest event sees the first religious leaders sign up to the Charter and speaking on behalf of the new signatories Canon Geoffrey Marshall said: “We are delighted to sign up to the Charter. We are united in our desire to work together to tackle unfairness and to promote respect and equality for everyone.”
The One Wrexham initiative has already seen a number of ground-breaking projects such as a range of mythbuster leaflets, multi-lingual information packs and a newsletter to businesses on community cohesion issues. The One Wrexham Charter signing event was organised by the Community Cohesion team within the Economic Development Department of Wrexham County Borough Council in partnership with the Council’s Learning and Teaching Advisor for Religious Education, Vicky Barlow, and Canon Geoffrey Marshall who is the Rector of Wrexham and also the Mayor’s Chaplain.
