Brand New Household Recycling Centre Opens Its Doors

Wrexham's brand new household recycling centre is now open.

The new purpose-built centre at Bryn Lane, Wrexham Industrial Estate will have improved recycling facilities and easier access to take remaining rubbish. One significant improvement will be that residents will no longer have to wait whilst the skips are emptied, as all servicing will be done from the rear of the site.

The £1.5 million facility has been made possible thanks to funding from the National Assembly for Wales and Wrexham County Borough Council.

Residents will be able to recycle newspapers, magazines, plastic bottles and glass, cans, clothing, as well as garden waste at the new centre.

The new centre will be open daily from 8am 'til 8pm (except Christmas Day). The Mayor of Wrexham Councillor David Rogers officially opened the site on Friday, July 23 at 10am.

Wrexham residents currently recycle 12% of their household waste, compared to less than 3% three years ago. In 2001 the Council sent 97% of household waste into landfill sites. The introduction of the Recycle With Michael kerbside recycling scheme together with the introduction of more Neighbourhood Recycling Centres has made recycling easier and more convenient for residents. The Council aims to recycle at least 15% this year, and has an ultimate target to recycle 40-50% of waste by 2010. By the end of this year 24,000 residents will have their recycled materials collected from the kerbside.

Chief Community Services Officer John Bradbury said:

"We hope that residents will find the Household Recycling Centre at Bryn Lane easier to use. The site will enable them to recycle more items reducing the amount of waste that is sent to landfill. We appreciate that there will be some residual waste but through recycling as much material as possible we can help to reduce pollution from gases, such as methane, that are produced by rotting waste at landfill. Our message is think twice before throwing items away and consider recycling to help protect Wrexham's environment for the future."

Mike Snell of the Waste Recycling Group said:

"This new development at Bryn Lane will provide a significant boost to Wrexham County Borough Council's success in achieving higher levels of recycling. Waste Recycling Group is delighted to have been able to contribute to this success over the last three years and look forward to working with the Council to develop similar initiatives in the future. We're confident that the new purpose-built facility, which complements other recycling initiatives currently being expanded by the Council, will be welcomed by residents across the County Borough."
