Cracking Down on Anti Social Behaviour
Wrexham Council is continuing its fight against anti social behaviour as it takes advantage of new powers that have become available under the Anti Social Behaviour Act 2003.
Tenants who break the rules laid down in a new policy by Wrexham County Borough Council could face anti social behaviour injunctions, demoted tenancies or even eviction. In recent weeks Wrexham Council has taken one tenant to court and the judge awarded the first demotion order issued in Wales when he agreed that enough was enough and that behaviour had to improve. In another court case a tenant was evicted after allegedly running a brothel from the property.
The act also includes extending the length of introductory tenancies and witholding permission to exchange a property or suspension of a tenant's Right to Buy
The Council's position re its tenants and anti social behaviour is outlined in the new Anti Social Behaviour Policy which is being presented to Executive Board next week. It clearly outlines how unruly tenants will be dealt with including the use of the new powers.
Landlord Services Manager, Fred Czulowski, said:
"We all have a right to live in peace and quiet and we will continue to take a tough stance with our tenants who are causing distress to other people. During the last year Tenancy Enforcement has dealt with 235 cases of serious anti social behaviour, we took tenants to the courts on 50 occasions and in total 21 tenants were evicted for anti social behaviour. We have also had 16 injunctions against tenants and signed up 15 acceptable behaviour contracts for childen aged 11 - 18 who had been causing anti social behaviour. Coupled with environmental improvements on some of our estates things are really beginning to change and this should encourage more and more people to report their concerns to us."
