Official Opening Alyn Waters Environmental Education Centre
The Alyn Waters Environmental Education Centre was officially opened today by the Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr Mike Edwards.
The showcase building was designed using the most modern and sustainable techniques available to have a minimal affect on the environment. The building is heated using ground source heat pump technology, water is heated using solar panels, sustainable materials such as timber has been used in the building and flooring and insulation is provided using recycled newspapers. As much material as possible was sourced locally or from sustainable sources and the oak flooring came from Oswestry and the recycled slates from Wales. A local builder, Maelor Builders, built the centre.
The centre comprises a café area, toilets with baby changing facilities, offices for staff and an environmental education centre. The facility has been designed as a flexible space to allow people to book and use as a meeting place, somewhere to hold events and activities, a place schools can use to explore the Park or take part in the orienteering course.
The project cost was in excess of £800,000 and has been 100% funded through West Wrexham Urban 2, Forestry Commission, Welsh Aggregates Tax Levy Fund, Adfwyio, Skies Fund and the Countryside Council for Wales.
The Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr Mike Edwards, officially opened the building this morning and said:
"This is a remarkable new building and I know it will provide a second to none facility for the local community, visitors, youth groups and school children. The environmental sustainable features are to be commended and are a credit to everyone who has been involved in the project. Well done everyone and I hope this is the first of many buildings of this type."
