There are over 2,000 garages in the Borough owned by the Housing Services. These are available for rent to council tenants and non-council tenants.
You can only use the garage to store a private motor vehicle.
For the year April 2013 - March 2014, the weekly rent for the council tenants is £6.79 per week and is payable weekly with your property rent. For non-council tenants, the rent is £7.38 a week (including VAT) and will be invoiced by the Finance Department on a quarterly basis.
Contact the local housing office.
You can either download the application form or obtain an application form from the local housing office.
In some areas, garages are in low demand and you might be offered a garage straight away. If not, you will be placed on the waiting list. A garage vacancy will first be offered to the applicant who has spent the longest time on the waiting list and then to the next longest applicant until the vacancy is allocated. If there are no council tenants requiring the garage, non-council applicants are considered in application date order. We do give priority to council tenants over non-council applicants.
When allocated a garage, you will be contacted by letter to confirm the allocation and provided with the Conditions of Tenancy – Garages which you must sign to agree to. Once you have signed, you can then pick up the keys.
Yes as long you have kept up your rent payments. You are allowed up to two garages if there is a long waiting list and up to 3 garages in a low demand area.
Contact the local housing office who will be able to advise you. Failure to do this will result you in losing the garage tenancy.
Repairs are carried out by the Housing Services. Please note that you will be re-charged for any damage caused accidentally, deliberately or because of neglect by you or other members of your household, visitors, pets or contractors hired by you.
You must give us one week notice in writing. You can either download the termination form or notify your local housing office in writing. We will then write to you to confirm the date of termination and date by which the keys should be returned.
