The research set out to seek the views and attitudes of local residents towards Winter Maintenance and Highway Inspections, Alyn Waters Country Park, aspects of Social Services and how you would like to receive Information from Wrexham County Borough Council.
A total of 279 questionnaires were returned from panel members giving a 55% response rate.
Winter Maintenance and Highway Inspections
Wrexham County Borough Council (CBC) is responsible for carrying out winter maintenance operations during the winter months. Operations include, gritting to prevent the formation of ice on main carriageways (roads) and snow clearing on roads and footways.
- The majority of panel respondents (81%) are very satisfied or fairly satisfied with the gritting of major roads within the borough. 13% of panel members or fairly dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with the gritting of major roads.
- The gritting of roads and pathways on housing estates receive high dissatisfaction levels with 49% and 58% of panel members feeling fairly or very dissatisfied respectively.

In order to improve the condition of Carriageways (roads) and footways, the Highway inspection regime is underway. All respondents were asked how satisfied or dissatisfied they are with highways and carriageways. Carriageways or main roads receive the highest overall satisfaction score, with 61% of respondents either very satisfied or fairly satisfied with the condition of carriageways or main roads.

Roads and footways in housing estates receive the lowest satisfaction scores with 44% of people either very dissatisfied or fairly dissatisfied with the condition of roads and footways in housing estates.

Alyn Waters Country Park
Wrexham CBC are continually aiming to improve the Alyn Waters Country Park and the services it offers visitors. For this reason panel members were asked a series of questions relating to the park.

Male respondents, working-age respondents and economically active respondents are more likely to have used the park in the last 12 months. In addition, respondents with children are significantly more likely (39%) than those without (24%) to have used the park in the last 12 months.

Visitors to the park were then asked what activities they carried out the last time they visited the Alyn Waters Country Park. Amongst all visiting panel members, the most popular activity undertaken at the park is walking, either generally (55%) or with the dog (27%). A further 12% use the park to cycle while a tenth have either visited the visitor centre and café (10%) or visited because they enjoy nature (10%).

Visitors to the park in the last 12 months were provided with a list of 12 possible improvements and asked to indicate what was their first, second and third most important improvements that are needed in the park. A cleaner park with less dog fouling (17%), more surfaced footpaths (15%) and more visible staff patrolling the park (14%) are the top three first most improvements needed.

Visitors to the park were then asked how satisfied or dissatisfied they are with the overall quality of the Alyn Waters Country Park. Encouragingly, the majority of visitors to the park are satisfied (85%) including 34% who are very satisfied. Just 2% express dissatisfaction with the park

All non-visitors to the Alyn Waters Country Park (194 respondents) were asked what would encourage them to visit. Knowing what the park had to offer (43%), having more time (24%) and better public transport to the park (10%) are the top three issues that would encourage people to use the park

Social Services
Wrexham CBC’s Social Services offer a range of services to vulnerable adults and children, aiming to maximise personal independence.
- Current users of social services amongst panel members (24 respondents) were then asked how satisfied or dissatisfied they are that the staff appear to be skilled and trained in offering support. Again, despite small base numbers, most of these respondents appear satisfied that staff are suitably skilled and trained (69% or 16 respondents). Just 7% or 2 respondents express dissatisfaction that staff appear skilled and trained in offering support.

Information from Wrexham County Borough Council
In order for Wrexham CBC to use their resident’s magazine more effectively they would like to understand the information that residents require. All panel members were asked a series of questions on how they currently receive information, how they would prefer to receive information and what they would like information on.

All respondents were asked whether they feel the information they get from Wrexham CBC is too much, about right or not enough. No respondents say they receive too much information while almost half (48%) state it is about right. A further 45% feel that they do not get enough information from the Council.

All respondents were asked which, if any, Council priorities they would like to know more on. Improving the quality of the local environment, recycling and reducing the amount of rubbish we send to landfill and improving roads and transport are the top three issues that respondents overall would like to know more on.

Respondents are least likely to want to know more on promoting the Welsh language and culture, local businesses and community regeneration, improving the housing stock and community cohesion.

Finally, all respondents were asked which, if any of the following aspects of the Council’s work would they like to know more on. The top three aspects that respondents would like to know more on are how Wrexham Council spends its money (62%), the reasons why Wrexham Council makes its decisions (56%) and improvements planned for services (49%).
