Wrexham
is exceptionally well served, at all levels of education. There is a good
network of state primary and secondary schools and there are also a number
of private day and boarding schools close by.
Yale College, the local Further Education provider, has recently moved
into new £15m premises adjacent to the town centre. It provides post GCSE
education and a wide range of vocational courses. Yale has close links
with the local business community, for which it frequently organises on
and off-site training courses.
The North Wales Institute of Higher Education (NEWI) is an Associate
College of the University of Wales. It has 5,000 full and part-time students
and offers a broad portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
NEWI has a thriving Engineering Department and, reflecting the concentration
of aerospace industries close by, runs courses in Avionics and Aeronautical
Engineering, as well as in the more conventional branches of engineering.
NEWI also has a tradition of strength in applied research and is a Centre
of Excellence for both Opto-Electronics and Materials Science. The College
has strong ties with local and regional businesses, it organises bespoke
training courses and is involved in government sponsored R&D projects
with companies. It is also involved in a number of initiatives which involve
both graduates and under graduates in working placements with companies.
The Broader Region
Looking to the broader region, Wrexham is within an hour's drive of 10
universities including, most notably, Manchester and Liverpool. All these
universities work closely with the business community and are keen to
make their expertise available to companies. It is also worth noting that
a large number of the institutions in this particular area have exceptional
research departments, which received the highest possible rating under
the latest Research Assessment Exercise.
